Calgary Shoulder Pain

Chronic pain is among the most common affections in the world, mostly because no single condition causes it. Chronic pain can occur as a result of a wide range of diseases and conditions, including as a result of mechanic injuries. At Calgary Core Physiotherapy, we know that regardless of its causes or the area of the body it is manifesting in, chronic pain can become extremely debilitating in the long run.

Calgary shoulder pain is a particularly annoying form of chronic pain due to its localization and the, sometimes, excruciating intensity. The shoulder is a complex articulation, consisting of three main bones (the scapula or the shoulder blade, the clavicle, and the humerus) and two large joints - the acromioclavicular one between the scapula and the collarbone, and the glenohumeral one between the humerus and the scapula (the shoulder joint).

With so many joined pieces and moving parts, making for the most mobile and intricate section of the human body, chronic pain attacking this area will cause a highly debilitating condition. Usually, shoulder pain occurs naturally with age in most individuals, but it isn’t uncommon for younger people to experience it as well.

What is the best treatment for shoulder pain?

There is no such thing as the best treatment, primarily because there is no single cause for Calgary shoulder pain. Depending on the underlying condition causing the symptom, different treatments or combination of treatments may be applied. Among these, the best procedures are the non-invasive ones, preferably, thanks to the lack of side-effects as well as minimizing the risk of post-surgical complications.

In this sense, we have:

1. Muscular therapies

In many cases, muscles are the ones responsible for inflicting and sustaining the chronic shoulder pain. Using medication to alleviate the suffering is only a temporary solution, which is why we focus on other options such as: massage and soft tissue therapy, Intramuscular Stimulation (using acupuncture needles to alleviate the tension in the muscles), Class IV Laser Therapy (a laser pulse is applied to reduce the inflammatory response in the soft tissue), and Muscle Activation Techniques (tackling muscle tightness through a series of therapeutic methods).

2. Joints and articulations treatments

Sometimes it is the articulations that are at fault for triggering or worsening the chronic pain. Whether we are talking about arthritis, mechanic injuries or any other type of problem, the treatment will always consist of the best therapeutic procedures we have. The Joint Manipulation and Mobilization program is one such procedure aiming at diagnosing and treating both the underlying problem and its manifestations.

3. Ligaments and tendons procedures

In case you experience problems with tendons or ligaments, two of the best treatment alternatives include the Ultrasound-Guided Prolotherapy and Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections, both highly effective in supporting the body’s natural healing processes.
